Superintendent's Message

  • Welcome to the Eastern Camden County Regional School District:

On behalf of the Eastern Camden County Regional Board of Education and its students and staff, I welcome you to the school district's website. This website is a resource designed to assist you with learning more about our school district.

Eastern is a limited purpose, public, regional system consisting of one high school: Eastern Regional High School (grades 9 -12). The student population of approximately 2000 is multicultural and reflects the diversity of the three communities it serves: Berlin Borough, Gibbsboro Township, and Voorhees Township.

Our current professional staff includes more than 145 fully certified classroom teachers, nine guidance counselors, seven Child Study Team members, two nurses, a media center specialist, two full-time athletic trainers, and a student assistance/crisis counselor. The administrative personnel include: the Superintendent, the School Business Administrator/Board Secretary, a Director of Academic Programs & Student Performance, a Director of Special Services, a Principal, Vice Principals, a Supervisor of Guidance, a Chief Technology Officer, a Director of Building and Grounds, a Director of Food Services, and a Transportation Coordinator.

Eastern is committed to the four A’s: Academics, the Arts, Athletics and Activities. Our students excel in academics. They are accomplished in the arts and theatre. They play and sing beautiful music, and they are highly competitive in athletics.

Our academic program offers a myriad of educational programs and services designed to meet the needs of individual students, and to provide them with opportunities to pursue their own special areas of interest. In addition to traditional course offerings in English, Social Studies, Mathematics, Science, World Language (French, Spanish, and Latin), Health & Physical Education, the school district provides programs in Preschool Child Development, Art, Vocal and Instrumental Music, Business Education, Gifted & Talented, Special Education, Family & Consumer Science, Robotics, Drones & Avaiation, Building Trades & Technology. Partnerships with Camden County College and Stockton University provide opportunities for our students to earn college credit while in high school. Our students earn college credits either through High School Plus or through concurrent enrollment opportunities.

A comprehensive high school, Eastern offers a multitude of courses, including 28 Advanced Placement courses, a professional staff recognized for excellence on the state and local levels, and a class size average of approximately 24 students. Curriculum is taught in a clean and safe environment that includes state-of-the-art learning facilities and extensive technology.

The school board has supported funding and programming for extensive technology-driven initiatives over the past six years, allowing the school to be one-on-one with iPads for all 2000 students. Teacher leadership through turnkey professional development and training is continually improving teachers’ effective use of technology and the importance of social-emotional practices in the classroom. Each teacher has a designated professional learning period built into the teaching schedule. Programs designed by student leaders and delivered to students by other students are the foundation of responsible digital citizenship.

The technological infrastructure of the school and community is strong. Students have access to technology-centered education 24/7. Continual investment in infrastructure in wireless access and servers has served the students well. New annual investments in technology maintain the strength of the systems and support our cybersecurity initiatives.

This year will see significant construction to further modernize the building. The community supported, with 63% votes in favor of a referendum, the installation of modern HVAC in every instructional area, including air conditioning for the first time in the school's history in all classrooms. The school board members voted for additional energy self-sufficiency with the installation of a third solar panel system in the form of carports and a canopy for one of our outdoor courtyard areas. The board members also invested capital funds to further enhance the security of the campus. Modern classroom doors will replace the original doors of classrooms from the initial construction of the high school in the 1960s. New integrated electronic systems will link the exterior entrance system to the camera security system. Also, sensors will be installed in restrooms and locker rooms to detect vaping products and provide emergency security notification. The construction began over the summer and will extend through 2023-2024.

We are most fortunate to have some of the most talented and academically gifted students in the tri-state area. Our students represent a diverse and multicultural population that continues to excel both in and out of the classroom. This is reflected by the high scores consistently earned on such standardized assessments, including the SAT, ACT, and Advanced Placement exams.

The Class of 2023 included 473 graduating seniors, more than 85% of whom will be attending two and four-year post-secondary schooling, 6% pursing career education or apprenticeships, 6% pursuing employment, and 1% entering military service.

Eastern is extremely proud of its students and recognizes their achievements regularly through special programs and publications. It is our belief that each student contributes something unique to the school in his or her own way. Outside the classroom, there are various activities in which students may choose to participate. More than 45 clubs and school organizations help enrich a student’s educational experience. Offerings include our Gifted & Talented program, in which students have participated in the Model United Nations at Harvard, Brown, Georgetown, Johns Hopkins and Rutgers universities, and on our own campus, the South Jersey Model UN; the Drama and Forensics Team, the Robotics Team, the Academic Challenge Team; Science and championship Math League competitors; and outstanding performing arts programs, featuring the annual fall play, one-act plays, and the spring musical.

In the area of athletics, Eastern maintains one of the finest and most successful programs in the state of New Jersey. With 22 highly competitive sports teams, Eastern competes in the Olympic Conference, arguably the toughest athletic conference in the state. We are proud of all our Viking athletes.

Parents and members of the community are encouraged to become active partners in the governance of the schools. The following parent groups share in the school’s many successes: District Advisory Council, Every Student Succeeds Parental Advisory Committee, Eastern Education Foundation, Band Parents' Association, Project Graduation, and the Berlin-Gibbsboro-Voorhees Municipal Alliance.

Outstanding students, dedicated staff members, first-rate facilities, and three communities that support and value education make the Eastern Camden County Regional School District a special place to work and learn.

School safety and security are of prime importance to the school district. Two School Resource Officers are employed on a full-time basis. All visitors must report to the main entrance of the building upon their arrival. They will be greeted by a security guard, asked to sign in, and screened before being issued a visitor’s pass. A blue-light lockdown warning system is installed throughout the building. In addition, extensive security cameras are installed to help monitor the interior and exterior of the building. Upgraded lighting in the parking areas has been erected. All students and staff have been issued electronic I.D. cards. The district’s Crisis Management Plan is continually reviewed and shared with staff. A new School Safety Threat Assessment team and process has been instituted using the same web-based reporting, investigating, and monitoring system used for Harassment, Intimidation, and Bullying incidents. The attacks on schools throughout our country remind us once again that school violence can happen anywhere, anytime and for any reason, and that we must be prepared.
